Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Neogene, N, (13e)

Province:
Heilongjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is the well M75-31 section located at the Xialiangzi Village in Jidong County, Heilongjiang Province. It was named and surveyed by Qu Guansheng and Hu Junsheng in 1984.

Synonym: Guan Qusheng et al. (1997) thought the Xialiangzi Fm is synonymous (coeval) with Fujin Fm.

Lithology and Thickness

It is characterized by the grey, greyish-green, and greyish-white sandy conglomerates, sandstones, and mudstones, intercalated with basalt or brown coal layers partly. The thickness is 240 m in the type section and the thickness overground varies from 18 m to 176 m in the district (the formation is mainly buried underground).

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Xialiangzi Fm is in faulted or unconformable contact with the underlying Hulin Fm (Fuhulin Fm) or Mesoproterozoic Longjiang Gr.

Upper contact

The Xialiangzi Fm is in unconformable contact with the overlying Quaternary deposits or Neogene Ningan Basalt Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in the Xingkai Lake plain, which is northeast of Jidong County and Mishan County in Heilongjiang Province.

Fossils

Sporopollens of angiosperm are dominant, including Juglanspollenites, Faguspollenites, and Quercoidites. Sporopollens of gymnosperm are lesser, including Pinuspollenites and Tsugaepollenites. Sporopollens of ferns are rare, including Sphagnumsporites and Osmundacaulis. Fossil plants are also found in this formation.

Age

The age of Xialiangzi Fm is probably Miocene according to the isotopic dating and stratigraphic comparison. K-Ar dating of basalt gives ages of 23.15±2.24 Ma and 27.91±2.34 Ma.
